Help Marin's Spotted Owls Survive
Description: We are indeed lucky to have Northern Spotted Owls in Marin. From June through July young chicks are leaving the nest, some of which are near residential areas. Young can sometimes be seen near hiking trails. The advice from our spotted owl biologist to help these owls survive and thrive is to leave them alone. If you see young or even adult owls, enjoy the moment and keep on going. Do not attempt to get close to the owls or linger so that you attract more people and/or predators. Keep dogs on leash and under control. Young owls are just learning to fly and sometimes land on the ground where they are particularly vulnerable. If you live near a spotted owl nest, avoid loud noises, such as from chain saws, during nesting season which generally begins in March. Northern Spotted Owls are protected under state and federal endangered species laws. Do not post locations on eBird. --Barbara Salzman, President, Marin Audubon Society
