SUMMARY:Bringing Birds to the Garden: California Native Plants for the Win
DESCRIPTION:Bringing Birds to the Garden: California Native Plants for the Win\nThursday\, September 10\, 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM\nSpeaker: Benny Isaac Jacobs Schwartz\nEvent is free. Register HERE for this speaker series. \nTopic:\nCalifornia is home to more than 5\,000 native plant species and over 700 recorded bird species\, yet habitat loss\, development\, and invasive plants threaten this biodiversity. \nThis presentation will explore the relationship between native plants and birds—and how home gardens can help restore habitat. Participants will learn how native plants provide food\, shelter\, and nesting opportunities\, along with practical guidance for planning\, planting\, and maintaining a garden suited to local conditions. \nThe program will also introduce birds commonly found in California yards\, parks\, and open spaces. Attendees will leave with useful tools and inspiration for creating landscapes that support birds and other wildlife. \nSpeaker Bio:\nBenny Isaac Jacobs Schwartz is the founder of BIRDS by BIJS\, a bird-guiding company and lifestyle brand connecting people with nature through birds. With more than 15 years of experience as a naturalist\, expedition leader\, and international bird guide\, he has led birding adventures across North and South America. He is also an educator and photographer who encourages people to slow down\, observe nature\, and discover the joy of birding. \nPhoto Credit: Townsend’s Warbler\nBy BIRDS by BIJS

Register HERE for this speaker series. \nTopic:\nLearn how the SF Bay State of the Birds (www.sfbaystateofthebirds.org) tracks bird trends as a sign of habitat health. Because birds tend to be sensitive to habitat changes and respond quickly\, they are great indicators of overall habitat health. The SF Bay State of the Birds website reveals timely insights that guide restoration and management across San Francisco Bay. Built for land managers\, funders\, scientists\, and community leaders\, it delivers frequent updates to advance conservation goals. \nSpeaker Bio:\nJulian Wood is the San Francisco Bay Program Leader at Point Blue Conservation Science and works to advance wetland-dependent bird conservation by leading innovative research and monitoring projects that inform on-the-ground restoration and management. \nPhoto Credit: Julian Wood

SUMMARY:Acorn Woodpeckers: Cooperation\, Conflict\, and Family Drama
DESCRIPTION:Acorn Woodpeckers: Cooperation\, Conflict\, and Family Drama\nThursday\, November 12\,\n7:00 PM to 9:00 PM\nSpeaker: Walt Koenig\, Research Zoologist Emeritus\, UC Berkeley\, and Graduate School Professor\, Cornell Lab of Ornithology\nEvent is free. Registration link coming soon for this speaker series.\n \nTopic:\nAcorn Woodpeckers\, best known for their unique habit of storing acorns by the thousands in special structures known as “granaries”\, are cooperative breeders that exhibit one of the most complex social systems of any bird. Based\non a long-term study of this species at Hastings Natural History Reservation in Monterey County\,\nWalt will explain some of the strikingly cooperative and diabolically competitive behaviors of this species that he and his\ncolleagues have discovered during their 50+ year field study. \nSpeaker Bio:\nWalt studied Acorn Woodpeckers as a Ph.D. student and Research Zoologist at UC Berkeley from 1974 to 2008. He was subsequently a Senior Scientist at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology in Ithaca\, New York\, from 2008 to 2016. He retired in 2016 and returned to upper Carmel Valley\, where he studies acorn production by California oaks\, continues to try and figure out Acorn Woodpecker behavior\, and perfects his sparkling wine palate. \nPhoto Credit: Acorn Woodpecker on Granary Tree\, by Becky Matsumara
