Western Scrub-Jay

This bird lives in woodlands, chaparral, and suburban gardens. Scrub jays bury acorns as a stashed food supply coming back later to retrieve the acorn when needed. Scrub jays help our oak forests by burying acorns 5000 acorns a year and forgetting where they hid some of them!

Size: 11 – 13 inches

Food: Insects, seeds (including lots of acorns), eggs, nestlings

Nest: cup nest made by male and female

In Marin: year round
