The Tiscornia Marsh rehabilitation effort is getting $5 million from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and $1.9 million from the California Ocean Protection Council. Nearly $7 million in grant funding is boosting a project to restore marshlands and add sea-level protections in San Rafael’s Canal neighborhood. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency awarded a $5 million grant to the Marin Audubon Society this week to support the rehabilitation of Tiscornia Marsh, a project years in the making. The marsh occupies 20 acres north of Pickleweed Park and the Albert J. Boro Community Center. “It’s very significant and exciting,” Marin Audubon Society president Barbara Salzman said of the award. “This is the biggest piece that will get us to the end of actually completing the project.” Read this article in Marin IJ

The Marin Audubon Society has completed its purchase of two parcels spanning 323 acres in unincorporated Novato. The nonprofit bought the diked bayland properties on Thursday, following through on a purchase agreement it signed last year. The group worked in partnership with Marin Baylands Advocates on the acquisition. “We’re thrilled to be able to do this,” said Barbara Salzman, president of the Marin Audubon Society. “It’s just a wonderful opportunity, and it really is on the Marin side, the last piece to make a continuous boundary of wetlands all along the Petaluma River and the land between the river and marshes.” Read this article in Marin IJ

A plan to restore two former tidal marshlands spanning more than 300 acres in Novato has received a $2 million boost from the state. The funding from the 2024 Climate Bond will help the Marin Audubon Society purchase the parcels so it can pursue a major restoration effort to expand the Bahia wetlands to about double the size. The project would create a contiguous corridor of tidal habitat from Novato through the Petaluma Marsh along the Petaluma River. The California State Coastal Conservancy voted unanimously to award the funding at its meeting on Feb. 19. Read this article in Marin IJ

World-famous Fairfax writer Anne Lamott turned “bird by bird” into a stylish phrase 32 years ago. Metaphorically, it suggested that folks should tackle major issues one step at a time. Nowadays, that’s precisely how bird watchers handle the Marin Audubon Society’s monthly field trips at The Ponds at the Las Gallinas Valley Sanitary District in San Rafael. One step at a time; one bird at a time. Read this article in Local News Matters
