“The Warden” – Mill Valley Film Festival Streaming Event
CA, United StatesMarin Audubon Society is partnering with the Mill Valley Film Festival to present “The Warden (De Vogelwachter)"
On the deserted beach of tiny Benty Island, the warden (Freek de Jonge in a wonderfully understated solo turn) follows a strict daily routine at the bird sanctuary he has overseen, alone, for decades. With the same precision as his beloved grandfather clock, he monitors the flocks of resident and migrating sea and shore birds that are his only companions and his constant source of wonderment. But everything in his world shifts tectonically when he learns that his post will be shut down. The warden must find a way to resist his fate—but how? Writer-director Threes Anna (The Bird Can’t Fly, MVFF31) captures the quiet joys of solitude and self-imposed isolation in a beautiful film allegory that fits the pandemic era we have now entered—and offers a glimpse of what joy there is to find oneself, after so long alone, face to face with another human being and kindred spirit.
Marin Audubon Society Fall Open House
Saturday, October 14, 2023 from 10:00 AM until noon
The event will take place at our Corte Madera wetland habitat next to the Corte Madera Marsh Ecological Reserve. We have a special event planned to highlight the history of the site, restoration work to date, and ongoing stewardship to support bird and wildlife habitat. Join us for the entire event or for whatever amount of time you can. This event is free for all ages and no RSVP is necessary.

- Location: Entrance to the wetland habitat is at the east end of Industrial Way in Larkspur, but there is very limited parking at the site.
- Parking: Parking is available in the parking lot behind the World Market Plaza Shopping Center at 2020 Redwood Highway. Access the parking lot by taking the road to the right of World Market. From the lot, take the packed dirt trail to the east, turn left on the main levee trail a short distance to the wetland habitat. There is also parking in the main shopping center parking lot.
- Bring: We recommend layers and a hat for cool or warm conditions, and binoculars for bird spotting.

Volunteer to Count Vaux’s Swifts
September begins the fall migration of Vaux’s Swift through Marin County Marin Audubon and the Bay Area Vaux’s Swifts Working Group are expanding efforts to count Vaux’s Swifts and are seeking new volunteers with various abilities to join in the effort through this Workshop. This is part of a wide effort to understand the largely unknown movement and roosting patterns of Vaux Swifts. We invite you to join us for this exciting citizen science opportunity! Volunteers will engage with knowledgeable Vaux’s Swift counters/members of the Working Group who bring years of experience to share with newly-motivated birders. Volunteers will learn about and participate in refining the methods used to count these large congregations of Vaux’s Swifts and plan future counting activities. The Workshop has two parts: - Thursday, September 5th - 7PM - a meeting on Zoom at which you will hear an overview of the conditions at the overnight roost areas, efforts to count the swifts at this local site, and the various ways you can help.
